Attorney General Myers warns consumers

Attorney General Hardy Myers today warned consumers to be cautious of Internet-based organizations advertising remedies intended to counteract the effects of biological agents such as Anthrax. Myers' announcement is part of a coordinated response to questions and concerns from the public regarding bio-terrorism.

"The Department of Justice has already received reports of opportunistic sales tactics. On behalf of Oregon consumers, I am very concerned with remedies to biological agents such as CIPRO that are being offered through the Internet and other non-medical sources." Myers said. "As always, consumers should exercise caution and check with their health care providers prior to consuming any medication that requires a prescription, or vitamin or nutritional supplements that make significant health claims."

Internet advertisers and e-mail solicitations are currently advertising items ranging from "military-certified" gas masks to prescription medications to vitamin supplements.
