A new outlook on veterinary nutrition |
|
|
December 10, 2003 By: Doug Murphy A new outlook on veterinary nutritionWhen it comes to eating right, each animal species, from rodents to humans, has a specific game plan. Unfortunately, many small-mammal pet owners are playing without a diet strategy and sidelining their companions with nutritional disease. Unlike dogs and cats that get their square meals in every bowl of commercial kibble, mealtime for pocket pets can pose a challenge. "Each animal species has particular nutritional requirements," said Dr. Thomas Tully, Jr, of the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine. "If people aren't aware of what those needs are, then problems can development in a short time." Dr. Tully and other small-mammal veterinarians are teaming up to spread the word and coach clients on proper nutrition. "We need to become educators, to impact the most people," Dr. Tully said. "We're still running into the same basic issues of small-mammal nutrition, even though these species have been household members for decades." Also see: womens health magazine. About
