Can treatments really help stop snoring?

Since snoring is not something that can be controlled by the sufferer, they simply cannot stop snoring as if it were a bad habit. Although snoring is very annoying, the greatest problem is the lack of adequate sleep suffered by the whole family. Most people will go to great lengths to stop snoring and surgical intervention is often necessary.

Snoring is a problem with the breathing when air flows through the passages at the back of the mouth and nose. The throat structures will vibrate causing the unpleasant noise. To provide some relief to help you stop snoring, there are many suggested treatments. Light snorers will have different treatments than heavy snorers and an otolaryngologist is a specialist who can help with diagnosis and treatment.

Self-help to stop snoring for the light snorer:
- Try different sleeping positions – do not lie on the back
- Exercise to develop better muscle tone and lose weight if needed
- Do not take sleeping pills, tranquilizers or antihistamines before bed
- Avoid alcohol and heavy meals for at least 4 hours before bed
- Tilt the head of your bed upwards about 4 inches

Non-surgical treatments to stop snoring:
- Dental devices which reposition the jaw
- Moulded pillow to aid in sleep position
- Special throat sprays
- Nasal mask or air strips

Surgical intervention to stop snoring:
- Laser assisted Uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) surgery to shrink the floppy palate
- Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) surgery to remove excess soft palate
- Other surgery to nasal, palatal, tongue or neck depending on which tissues are affected

With any treatment methods to stop snoring, most people never achieve 100% relief but sleep is often improved. If snoring sufferers can get some help, health is also improved as nights offer better rest.
