August 09, 2001 By: Arlene Martell A snoring disorder does have negative health effectsSnoring disorders are unhealthy for a number of reasons. First of all, lack of sleep isn’t too critical, but when it happens night after night, sleep apnea can occur. Sleep apnea is a nightly struggle between sleeping and breathing. When the throat collapses, it feels like you are being choked and you wake up over and over in the night. Snoring disorders cause the sufferer to feel tired and irritable in the morning. Sleep apnea causes blood oxygen levels to sink below normal for as much as half the night. This makes the heart pump harder to circulate the blood faster. Over time, this stress contributes to an increased risk of irregular heartbeats, high blood pressure and stroke in snoring patients. Poor attention span from lack of sleep adds risks to driving and may be a workplace hazard. For pregnant women who snore, studies have shown that the birth weights of their babies were slightly lower. It is very important to treat a severe snoring disorder for the sake of your own good health and to make you easier to live with in the morning.
