August 09, 2001 By: Arlene Martell Get help for snoring and get a good night sleep! There are over 300 devices registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office that claim help for snoring. If you are an occasional snorer, there are many non-invasive things you can do to help yourself. Simple changes in positioning are effective. Many others find relief through special sprays, dental devices, nasal strips, special pillows or surgery. The trick is to avoid products that only work because they keep you awake half the night. Your physician will recommend shedding as little as 10 to 15 pounds which can dramatically decrease snoring. An otolaryngologist is a specialist who will diagnosis and recommend treatments to provide help for snoring patients. For the more severe snoring cases, laser surgery is often recommended. Surgery such as laser assisted Uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) helps to shrink the floppy palate. Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) surgery removes excess soft palate. There are different success rates depending on the surgery needed to provide help for snoring cases. Other surgeries to nasal, palatal, tongue or neck may be of benefit depending on which tissues are affected.
