How hard it is to make the healthier choice

Latest Which? research from Consumers' Association shows that there is a limited healthy choice when it comes to eating out at Great Britain's most popular tourist attractions.

Fast food outlets were the mainstay of the theme parks, generally providing high fat foods.

Where healthier options were on offer they were mainly limited to kebabs and salads. Fruit and vegetables were often hard to find and where they were available the range was often unattractive and unappealing.

The three worst were Camelot Theme Park, Flamingoland and New Pleasurewood Hills Theme Park. New Pleasurewood Hills was described by researchers as arguably one of the most depressing of all the theme parks in terms of the choice of food on offer.

The report, Day chipper, sets out a number of recommendations to tourist attractions and caterers to break down the barriers to healthy eating.

These include providing a wider range of affordable and healthy options and using a traffic light labelling scheme to sign-post healthy eating choices by showing how much salt, sugar and fat they contain.

Some of the attractions, including some of the museums, did offer a wider choice of healthier options, showing that it should be possible for all attractions to provide their customers with this level of variety.

Nick Stace, director of campaigns, Which?, said, Today's research is yet another example of how hard it is to make the healthier choice.

Industry needs to ensure that wherever you are it's just as easy to pick up a nutritious sandwich and some fruit as a hotdog and fries.
