Health Food Retailers and Consumers work together to fund Legal Challenge against EU

The National Association of Health Stores and Consumers for Health Choice are now working together to market a new range of specialist supplements with the sole intention of funding legal action against the destructive EU supplement legislation.

Initially, monies generated will be used to continue the fight against the Food Supplements Directive through the European Court of Justice, following the successful Judicial Review in London early this year.

The newly formed company Save-Our-Supplements Ltd which owns the First Nutrition brand has not for profit status and will provide a range of high quality vitamins, minerals, herbs and other supplements under the First Nutrition brand through independent health food stores throughout the UK.

The Food Supplements Directive is intended to harmonize the market in supplements across all 25 Member States. The reality is that it will remove around 300 currently available nutrients and nutritional ingredients; resulting in 5,000 products disappearing from UK retail shops, substantially limiting the choice of British consumers.

Substantial funds will be required to meet the legal costs of this case. After covering operating costs, Save-Our-Supplements Ltd will donate all operating profits to the fund; which has been set up by NAHS and CHC to co-ordinate the financing of this legal challenge which is likely to take place later this year.

It is well recognised that the costs of mounting this legal challenge cannot be met by the combined current level of donations from concerned consumers and companies within the industry.

However, this initiative will allow a significant contribution to be raised as a result of caring consumers deciding to modify their purchasing habits to support this high quality range of products competitively priced and available from committed retailers.
