Get the facts on DHEA

DHEA, or Dehydroepiandrosterone is a naturally occurring hormone produced by the body's adrenal glands. Relatively little research has been done on DHEA, but the potential as a supplement has been touted as the next big thing. Since so little is know about it, you should use caution if you are thinking trying it.

Studies on rats and mice show that DHEA has the potential to prevent or delay the onset of cancer, "hardening" of the arteries, lowered immunity, and even obesity, and diabetes. This seems like a pretty amazing thing for one hormone to accomplish so be sure to check with your physician to get an expert opinion before using the supplement.

Since DHEA is a potent steroid hormone, there may be some potentially risky side effects, especially in women. However some studies of hormone replacement therapy have also shown that the benefits far outweigh the risks. This being the case, taking this supplement may be of great benefit to a great number of people, but more studies should be done first.
