  • Roche vitamins innovation award 2003
In a ceremony on 21 May 2003, Roche's Vitamins and Fine Chemicals Division endowed one of its scientists with its Innovation Award. The goal of the prize is to honour the best internal innovation of the year, and to stress the significance of research for the Division.

The Innovation Award 2003 goes to Dr August Rüttimann, for the development of a new process for genistein. This substance is naturally present in soy products such as soybeans, tofu or soyflour. Genistein belongs to the chemical family of the isoflavones, which has health benefits related to cardiovascular diseases, cancer, menopausal symptoms and especially osteoporosis.

Dr Rüttimann successfully elaborated an environmentally friendly process to produce genistein in a very pure form. This new and exclusive process has been filed for patent and will be implemented in our facility at Sisseln, Switzerland. Genistein in pure form will be available in 2004, for applications in the food and dietary supplement industries.

Roche's Vitamins and Fine Chemicals Division is the world's leading supplier of vitamins and carotenoids to the feed, food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. It has its own research centres, production facilities and worldwide sales and distribution network. In 2002, it employed 7300 people and recorded sales of approximately 3.4 billion Swiss francs. As announced, Roche has sold its Vitamins and Fine Chemicals Division to the Netherlands-based DSM group, pending approval of the merger control authorities. In 2002, Roche's Vitamins and Fine Chemicals Division invested 125 million Swiss francs in research and development.
